Flakes Followed By The Cold

November 22, 2009 - Leave a Response
Although a few of us might see a few flakes this week — the bigger story will be the huge drop in temperatures just in time for Thanksgiving.

Clouds will hold strong today — you might see a sliver of sunshine or two.  It will be warm this afternoon at 60°, which is 10°-12° above normal.  For tonight, we’ll fall back to 45° with the clouds sticking around the area.

Then on Monday, the cold front approaches and will bring a chance for rain showers by 4 PM.  It looks like the evening drive will be a wet one!  Temperatures with this system look to stay warm to keep just about all of us in the rain category through Tuesday morning.  However, if that cold air catches up in enough time, a few snowflakes are possible.  Who has the best chance at seeing the flakes?  North of 36 Highway — Tuesday morning.  No accumulation is expected even in this area where the flakes could fall.  You may encounter some flakes and/or a slushy accumulation if you travel I-29 near Omaha or I-35, closer to Des Moines.

Highs on Wednesday and Thanksgiving will be 44° and 47°, respectively.  Warming winds by Friday at 52°.  Middle 50’s expected with sunshiny skies next weekend.

Have a great one!

Take care,

Tracking A Strong Cold Front…

November 21, 2009 - Leave a Response
Dense fog in spots this morning, leading to a partly cloudy afternoon.  Temperatures should warm into the upper 50’s.  Isolated showers will be around after 5 PM through tonight.  By Sunday morning, thick fog expected again in a few locations – maybe even some drizzle.  Sunday afternoon looks dry with highs close to 60°.

There’s still a very strong cold front on tap for Monday and Tuesday.  Most of Monday looks dry at 56°.  After dark, rain showers are possible.  There’s still some question as to whether or not the cold air will get here in time to meet any moisture by Tuesday morning.  If the cold and moisture can come together, then snow is possible by the Tuesday AM drive.  This cold front will certainly drop our temperatures to the upper 40’s on Tuesday.

Wednesday looks dry and cold around here at 44°.  Thanksgiving will be 49° with a mixture of sun and clouds.  Warming winds take over by Friday at 52°.  Still quiet and pleasant on Saturday at 53°.

Travel concerns for Saturday will be from Houston to Little Rock through New Orleans.  Some of the heavy rains from those cities will move East toward Memphis and Jackson.

Other travel concerns today include a rain/snow mixture in Seattle and Portland along with snow in Boise.

Stay tuned for updated travel concerns through the holiday week here at KMBC.com…we’ll also have further updates on our rain/snow chance, too!

Where Will The Coldest Air Set Up Shop?

November 15, 2009 - Leave a Response
A lot is riding on how cold the temperatures will get with this stubborn and changing storm system that’s expected to move into SW Missouri/NW Arkansas….

For Sunday…heavy rains are developing across Central Kansas and will march into the KC viewing area through most of Sunday.  Temperatures will stay warm enough to keep everything as rain.  However, it’s a different story West of I-135 from Salina to Wichita, where the rain will change to a wintry mix.  Snow will continue in Eastern Colorado and Western Kansas where 7 to 11 inches of snow is likely.  Winds will be strong out there to create blizzard-like conditions.

On Monday…morning commute looks misty with isolated showers.  By midday, the next wave arrives bringing rain to KC.  But, if temperatures cool within the system, then a change from rain to snow is possible on NE Kansas and NW Missouri.  By evening, a wintry mix could develop in most of our Kansas counties while the Missouri counties stay warm enough for rain.  Highs on Monday will only top out at 41°.

Tuesday…temperatures continue to chill, especially for folks South of I-70.  This is where the best bets will be for a wintry mix with rain North of I-70…and this could impact the morning commute!!  Highs will be around 39°.

Then on Wednesday…this system is wrapping up in the morning with a few flakes.  Highs will only get to 40°.

It’s still a little early to talk accumulations for two different reasons.  Number one, we’ll have to see where the coldest temperatures line up aloft in this system.  Number two, it’s uncertain if we’ll be able to cool the ground enough for anything to collect.

Sunshine back on Thursday with showers Friday and Saturday.  At least by Thursday, we’re looking at slightly warmer temperatures in the 50’s.

Stay tuned to KMBC 9 throughout the day for the latest weather updates.  You can also track the storm on our website, KMBC.com, using Interactive Radar.

Snow For Some…Rain For Us

November 14, 2009 - Leave a Response

Rainy days are upon us…

A brief shower or perhaps a few sprinkles will greet you today.  Clouds will dominate with highs not that warm at 55°.  Light rain possible tonight and throughout Sunday.  Temperatures will cool even more to 47°.

We’ll need to watch this storm system as it sits around our area through Wednesday morning.  Folks in Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado could see accumulating snow as early as Sunday evening.  For us, we’ll keep everything as rain until late Tuesday/early Wednesday.

A couple rounds of rain around our area Monday and Tuesday with highs in the middle 40’s and lows in the middle to upper 30’s.  With this rain event happening here, I still think snow will be possible West of Salina in western Kansas and Eastern Colorado.  Interstate-70 could be problematic for travel West of Salina.  As this storm continues to produce its own pool of colder air, we’ll cool through Wednesday morning.  A brief changeover to snow is possible Tuesday night and Wednesday morning…right now, it doesn’t look like accumulation is a concern for us.  However, if the colder air arrives sooner, then we may have to revisit this.

On Thursday, sunshine returns for 1 day!  We’ll warm to 54°.  Rain returns next Friday and Saturday.

Be sure to join us for First News Weekend from 7 to 9 AM today.  Meteorologist Erin Little will have new weather information tonight on KMBC 9 News this evening.  And, as always, you can get the latest forecast at your fingertips at KMBC.com.

More Of The Same – Only Windier

November 8, 2009 - Leave a Response
Sunny to partly cloudy today with extreme wind.  It will be gusty with southerly winds at 10 to 25 MPH.  Stars and clouds tonight with good sleepin’ lows at 55°.  Clouds increase on Monday and showers should arrive by nightfall.  Not as warm at 62°.

Rain and a few rumbles possible through Tuesday morning.  Highs continue to tumble to 59°.  Mostly sunny with the breeze picking up Wednesday through Thursday.  Highs return to the lower 60’s.  A chance for showers on Friday and next Sunday.  Highs next weekend don’t look as warm in the upper 50’s.

Have a great one!

Can’t Be Better Than This!

November 7, 2009 - Leave a Response
A beautiful weekend with highs in the middle 70’s.  The breeze will ease by Saturday afternoon, but pick up again on Sunday.

Rain still on tap for Monday night and Tuesday morning.  Right now, no severe weather is expected and this front is going to quickly sweep the rain away from the area.  Temperatures will be affected by a fall to 62° on Monday and 59° on Tuesday.

The up and down ride of temperatures continues through the week.  A warm-up to the middle 60’s Wednesday and Thursday before showers arrive Friday and Saturday.  Late in the week, temperatures will fall into the middle 50’s for highs and upper 30’s for lows.

Enjoy this wonderful weekend!

Take care,
Lisa

Sunday’s Sunshine and Heated Temperatures

November 1, 2009 - Leave a Response
Mostly sunny, nice and warm for today with highs around 67°.  A cold front comes through by dawn on Monday.  Highs will be slightly cooler in the lower 60’s.  No showers with this cold front – only a few clouds.

Partly cloudy Tuesday through Wednesday with highs in the upper 50’s to lower 60’s.  Maybe a shower Thursday into Friday…but the chances still look rather slim.  Highs will fall into the upper 50’s.

Warmer with sunshine next weekend as highs return to the lower 60’s.

Have a great one!

Take care,
Lisa

All Treats…No Tricks

October 31, 2009 - Leave a Response
No tricks about today’s forecast…it will be beautiful!  Mostly sunny today with highs around 58°.  Temperatures for trick-or-treaters will be in the upper 40’s under a full moon!

Gorgeous again on Sunday and even warmer at 65°.  Two colds fronts come through this week…one on Monday and another on Thursday.  Each front will have limited amounts of moisture.  The front on Monday will drop temperatures slightly to 59° and give us a few clouds.  I don’t see any sprinkles or showers with this system.  The one pegged for Thursday has more moisture to produce a few sprinkles or even a light shower.  However, no heavy rains nor storms are expected.

Temperatures for the next 7 days will vary from the upper 50’s to lower 60’s.  No hard freeze yet…

Have a Happy Halloween!

Take care,
Lisa

Can’t Escape The Rain For Too Long

October 25, 2009 - Leave a Response
Showers on the move today.  After 12 PM, drips will be around the KC viewing area.  Rain expected to become heavier by evening and continue through early Monday.  The high today will be 61° followed by 57° tomorrow.

Partly cloudy on Tuesday at 62°.  Rain arrives on Wednesday and into Thursday.  If enough cold air can be translated to the ground Thursday, morning, a few flakes will be possible.  Highs on Wednesday will be in the lower 60’s followed by the lower 50’s on Thursday.

Quiet Friday through Saturday before showers return next Sunday.  Highs next weekend will stay in the 50’s with lows in the lower 40’s.

Have a great week!

Take care,
Lisa

Sunshine And Wind Direction Help To Warm Us Up

October 24, 2009 - Leave a Response
Clouds cleared out overnight…now it’s time to warm things up!  Sunny to partly cloudy today with highs in the upper 50’s to lower 60’s.  Tonight, a few clouds with lows not as cold at 45°.

Sunday morning will be dry with showers arriving on the Kansas side around 3 PM.  Doesn’t look like any of this rain will be heavy – it’s a fast moving system.  Highs Sunday will be in the upper 50’s.

Maybe a few leftover showers early Monday morning with clearing skies at 57°.  The breeze picks up by Tuesday with another round of showers late in the day through Wednesday.  We might even get some lightning out of this rain.

Lower 50’s with a sun/cloud mix on Thursday.  Then on Friday, the wind increases with warmer temperatures to 55°.  Showers again by next Saturday at 60°.

Take care,
Lisa
