Teachman’s Take: Heavy Snow Expected

February 7, 2010 - Leave a Response
Expect light snow and freezing drizzle this morning…this activity is going to be light and shouldn’t be too much of a problem.  After 3 PM, snow will start to fall in the KMBC viewing area, especially on the Kansas side.  Highs will be above freezing this afternoon at 34°.

Tonight, snow continues and will become heavy in spots.  By 5 AM, we could already have 2″ in the metro.  Snow will continue through Monday with temperatures falling into the 20’s.  Looks like there will be another round of heavy snow by late afternoon/early evening on Monday.  Winds will also pick up, which could cause blowing and drifting of the snow, reducing visibility.  Depending on where the heaviest band of snow develops, here in the metro are we could pick up 6″ or more.  Up to 4″ of snow in NE Kansas.  North of I-70, folks might see 4″ to 6″ of snow.  It definitely looks like this storm will be a good snow producer and snowfall totals will vary depending on where you live.

Snow ends by 11 PM Monday in Kansas City.  Cold air with highs in the 20’s on Tuesday with lows dropping to the single digits.  A slow warm-up from Wednesday through Thursday from the 20’s to the lower 30’s.  A slight chance for snow on Friday.  Next weekend looks quiet for now.

Take care,
Lisa

Teachman’s Take: Winter Storm Watch

February 6, 2010 - Leave a Response
WINTER STORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF THE KMBC VIEWING AREA FROM SUNDAY EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING….

Saturday will be a fairly quiet day with a few spotty flurries and cloudy skies.  Highs will be in the middle 30’s.

Changes happen on Sunday…light snow moves into NE Kansas and NW Missouri by 5 AM.  Kansas City may see a few flakes during the morning.  But, the big show happens by Sunday evening and lasts through Tuesday morning.  Snow will be heavy at times and for folks along and South of I-70, it’s possible that we could see more than 6″ of snow.  North of I-70 could see 2″ to 4″ of snow.  This storm is going to stick around longer than the last one…and it looks stronger, too.

Leftover flurries Tuesday morning.  Highs will be in the 20’s with lows in the single-digits.  Gradually warmer by the end of the week with highs in the 30’s and lows in the teens.  There’s a slight chance for a few flakes Thursday night into Friday morning…right now this system looks rather unorganized and weak.

Take care,
Teach

Teachman’s Take: Snow Beginnings

January 31, 2010 - Leave a Response
Patchy fog this morning South of I-70.  It doesn’t look like it’s going to be that big of an issue for us.  Clouds will return later today.  Overall, it’s going to be a great day at 34°!

Snow returns to the region on Monday.  Folks in NE Kansas and NW Missouri will see the first flakes around 5 AM.  The snow spreads into Kansas City by 9 AM.  We’ll have snow through lunch and dinner…the evening rush might be on the slick side.  Snowfall amounts look rather light from a trace to 1″.  There might be some isolated 2″ spots.  Heaviest snow will be North of 36 Highway on the Missouri side with 2″ to 3″.

Partly cloudy on Tuesday at 36°.  There is another weak storm system for later this week…however, it looks rather unorganized.  It may be delayed until Friday with a chance for rain and then snow.  Temperatures for highs will be in the upper 30’s and lows in the middle 20’s.

Have a great Sunday!

Take care,
Teach

Teachman’s Take: Quiet Weekend With Sun Appearing

January 30, 2010 - Leave a Response
Maybe a stray flurry this morning before the clouds break up this afternoon.  Cold temperatures at 26°.

Protect the pets and pipes tonight with lows at 11°.  We may see some patchy freezing fog.  Then on Sunday, partly cloudy and warmer at 32°.

Snow arrives after the morning rush on Monday.  Temperatures will warm to 35°.  Snow should linger through the evening rush.  By Tuesday, some sunshine returns with highs remaining in the middle 30’s.

Late Wednesday into Thursday, there’s a chance for rain or snow.  Temperatures may be cold to produce snow North of 36 Highway, with points South involved in rain showers.  We’ll have to get closer to this storm before we have a better handle on how warm it will get.

Forties Thursday through Saturday with quiet conditions.

Have a great one!

Take care,
Lisa

Rain Today With Snow On The Way

January 23, 2010 - Leave a Response
Rain is moving in this morning.  We’ve had a couple of heavier pockets, but not many.  Thunder is still a possibility through Saturday with the off and on rain.  Mild temperatures this afternoon at 52°.

Rain ending late tonight with temperatures falling to 31°.  Then on Sunday, we’ll be watching the back side of this system…it won’t have much moisture to work with…however, a few flakes will fly North of 36 Highway late in the day.  We’ll also have a few leftover snow showers along the Missouri/Iowa state line through Monday morning.  I don’t think Kansas City will get any accumulation out of this as the main portion tracks North of us, giving more of the snow to Nebraska and Iowa.

Temperatures remain in the middle 30’s for highs Monday and Tuesday.  Overnight lows in the teens and lower 20’s.

Wednesday into Thursday, our next storm system arrives.  Temperatures are still questionable at the beginning of this storm.  It could be warm enough to start as rain for some…and snow for others.  By Thursday, widespread snow is possible.

Highs fall back to the 20’s on Friday and lower 30’s on Saturday.

Take care,
Lisa

Goodbye To The Sun…For The Next Week!

January 18, 2010 - Leave a Response
Thick fog again this morning — it could cause slick spots as the fog freezes North of I-70.  By lunchtime, the fog will thin giving us a mostly cloudy afternoon.  Highs will climb into the lower 40’s.

Dense fog again tonight with showers developing after 3 PM on Tuesday.  Temperatures will start in the lower 30’s, so once again we could have icy spots.  By afternoon, the approaching showers will be in the form of rain since temperatures will be in the middle 40’s.

Soggy both Wednesday and Thursday.  A break on Friday.  Highs in the 40’s with lows in the 20’s and 30’s.

Next weekend, storms and wind for Saturday with highs around 50°.  Cold air crashes our temperatures by Sunday with the leftover moisture falling in the form of snow.

Take care,
Lisa

Thicker Fog With Sun On The Way

January 17, 2010 - Leave a Response
The fog is even thicker this morning than yesterday morning.  Temperatures have warmed above freezing in Kansas City — limiting the icy spots on bridges and overpasses.  However, North of 36 Highway, temperatures are colder than 32° and with the fog, slick spots are likely.  By this afternoon, we stand a really good chance for seeing some sunshine.  Temperatures will warm to 42°.

Fog around tonight with lows around 30°.  Light southerly winds on Monday with more clouds and some sunshine.  Highs in the middle 40’s.

Rain possible late on Tuesday through Thursday.  There might be a few heavy pockets of rain Thursday morning.  Highs will cool slightly in the lower 40’s with overnight lows in the middle 30’s.  We get a break on Friday before more rain and wind arrive on Saturday.  Temperatures then approach 50°.  By Sunday, colder air wraps in behind this system and snow is possible.

Have a great one!

Take care,
Lisa

Showers Later Today?

January 16, 2010 - One Response
Fog is even thicker this morning and with temperatures below freezing, freezing fog is a concern.  After 12 PM, the fog should mix out and temperatures will continue to warm.  Highs this afternoon will be in the upper 30’s.  There’s a southern track storm system that’s giving Springfield some rain this morning…I see some of these showers sneaking into the southern reaches of our viewing area.  Best bets for afternoon drips will be East of the state line and South of I-70.

We might have a few leftover drips tonight around Kansas City.  A few flakes are not out of the question North of 36 Highway closer to the Iowa/Missouri state line, where temperatures will be colder.  Temperatures tonight will fall below freezing and any fog that develops could promote slick spots overnight and first thing Sunday morning.  By Sunday afternoon…more sunshine!!!  Highs will warm to 42°.

Clouds thicken going into Tuesday with a slim chance for a late-day shower.  Rain possible Wednesday through Thursday.  Temperatures during this time look to stay warm enough to keep this system as rain…highs will be in the middle to upper 40’s with lows in the middle 30’s.

A small break on Friday at 46°.  Rain next Saturday at 43°.

Have a wonderful Saturday!

Take care,
Lisa

Bitter Cold Start, But Better By Afternoon

January 10, 2010 - Leave a Response
A very cold start this morning below zero.  Southwesterly winds will kick in and warm us up to 24° this afternoon.  You’ll see a few more clouds this afternoon due to another storm system getting closer.

Monday through Tuesday morning, a few flurries are possible.  It doesn’t look like we’ll see any accumulations with this system.  The brunt of the snow will be over Chicago and Detroit, causing travel delays.  Temperatures will continue to warm to 28° on Monday and 30° on Tuesday.

There’s another system that arrives late Thursday and into Friday.  This system is also starved for moisture.  We might get a few flakes out of it.  The heaviest portion of this storm will track through Arkansas and Louisiana.

Temperatures still on a warming trend from Wednesday through next Sunday.  Highs will be in the middle 30’s with lows in the middle 20’s.

Take care,
Lisa

Slow To Warm Up

January 9, 2010 - Leave a Response
The Wind Chill Warning and Wind Chill Advisory have been cancelled for Kansas City.  Cloud cover overnight has allowed temperatures to stay warm enough.  However, there’s still a dangerous wind chill that’s anywhere from -5° to -15°.  Bundle up today and wait for the sunshine by afternoon.  It won’t warm us up much with highs in the single digits.

Tonight, stars and a few clouds with lows at 2°.  Sunny to partly cloudy on Sunday with a high of 20°.

Weak system arrives on Monday that will produce a few flakes.  The bulk of this system tracks in the Great Lakes region, giving them accumulating snow, slick roads and airport delays.  Highs still warming at 24°.

Wednesday we finally get to 32° and stay there through next weekend.  There’s a slim chance for light snow by Friday.

Have a great one!

Take care,
