Winter Storm Warning…Snow’s On The Way!

A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE KC VIEWING AREA UNTIL LATE FRIDAY.

This morning we’ll have mist and light showers – a flake or sleet pellet might also be in the mix. More mixing around 12 PM before we see the rain change to snow in Kansas City around 3 PM. Temperatures will fall into the upper 20’s this afternoon. Winds will also be gusty, so any snow falling will cause visibility to become poor. Snow will continue tonight and through Christmas. This storm is expected to stick around a little longer than the last 2 systems…and we’ll see intensification with this system today. This means more snow for folks who didn’t get it last time. Total snowfall…heaviest across NE Kansas and NW Missouri where there will be a thin strip of 8″ to 12″ which will include Falls City, Nebraska. Topeka, St. Joseph, and Kansas City will be in the 3″ – 8″. Chanute to Sedalia and up to Chillicothe will see 1″ to 3″ of snow.

Snow showers linger into Saturday with highs in the teens. Maybe a leftover flurry on Sunday. Sunshine and clouds Monday through next Thursday. Highs will slowly climb from the upper 20’s on Monday to the lower 30’s on Thursday.

Winter Storm Watch Is Up!

A WINTER STORM WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE KC VIEWING AREA! Accumulating snow will be likely Thursday afternoon through Christmas Day.

Rain has taken over the area today with warming temperatures. Heavy rain and thunder is likely on Wednesday with highs in the lower 50’s. Thunderstorms expected through tonight and into Thursday morning. Flooding issues are still a concern given the amount of rain expected to fall on frozen ground.

After 12 PM Thursday, colder air will arrive to our western-most counties on the Kansas side. By midnight, snow is expected in Kansas City (if not, a few hours earlier). Snow will continue throughout Christmas Day. Snowfall totals have been taken up to 3″ to 8″ in the metro with heavier amounts…4″ to 8″…in NE Kansas and NW Missouri.

Flurries leftover early Saturday morning before sunshine on Sunday. Temperatures during the weekend will be in the 20’s. Maybe a few flakes next Wednesday.

Next Storm: Majority Of It Will Be Rain Instead Of Snow

Most of the day will be dry and cloudy. We might have a few showers and drizzle around Kansas City by 5 PM. At this time, there could be a light wintry mix along the Iowa/Missouri state line. Temperatures today will be mild at 42°.

Overnight, warm air continues to spread North. There could be some slick spots North of 36 Highway…overall, it looks like a rainy night with lows in the middle 30’s. Rain and thunder through tomorrow…rain could be heavy leading to flooding since the ground is frozen. Highs will be in the middle 40’s.

For Thursday…it still looks rather warm across the entire KC viewing area. More rain is expected and we’re not going to see the change to snow until late in the day…if not, at night! Temperatures will be in the middle 40’s once again.

Snow possible Christmas morning. Because the majority of this storm will be warm to support rain, snowfall accumulations in the metro look rather light. However, North of 36 Highway, expect heavier accumulations. Also, there will be a lot of snow across Nebraska and Iowa…they could have a blizzard.

Clouds clear through the weekend with highs in the 20’s. Maybe a few flakes next Tuesday, but right now this system doesn’t look that strong.

Storm Moves In Soon!

A mixture of sun and clouds for Monday – not bad at all at 41°. Tonight, a few flakes are possible along the Iowa/Missouri state line. Temperatures will fall into the lower 30’s.

On Tuesday, snow will develop by late morning North of 36 Highway…by afternoon, snow trends closer to the metro, but still North of I-70…points South will be warm enough for rain. The high will be 39°.

Mostly rain on Wednesday with a few flakes mixing in North of 36 Highway. It still looks like late Wednesday and into Thursday morning, we’ll have a change to snow. Kansas side looks to change first as the colder air moves in. Needless to say, this storm is still expected to intensify on Wednesday. Heaviest snowfall accumulations will be in northern Missouri – North of 36 Highway. Snow will stick in Kansas City on Thursday…however, most of this storm will be in the form of rain for the metro, which will knock down snowfall totals.

A few flurries leftover on Friday with a mostly cloudy sky. It will be cold at 24°. Sunshine peeks through the clouds over the weekend with highs in the lower 20’s and lows in the teens.

Flurries And Sunshine

Clouds will battle the sunshine today. Flurries are even possible in northern Missouri…North of St. Joseph and Chillicothe. Today will be milder at 40°.

Monday will be quiet with more clouds than sunshine at 38°. Then our next storm system arrives on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s system still looks like it will begin as rain with temperatures in the upper 30’s.. However, the track of this system is still up in the air. Computer models aren’t agreeing on where to put the center of the storm…which will greatly determine how soon we see the snow.

A cold rain through the day on Wednesday for us with severe storms from Arkansas through Louisiana. By Wednesday evening, cold air comes rushing into Kansas where we could see snow first as this weather system intensifies. Snow will be widespread through the day on Thursday. Latest models want to keep the snow around for a little longer on Thursday. It’s too early to talk snowfall amounts…but accumulations look likely with a period of heavy snow over parts of our area.

Flurries will linger into Christmas Day with the high at 24°. Maybe a leftover flurry next Saturday.

Cool Sailing Through The Weekend

Partly cloudy with a slight breeze on Saturday. Since we’ll be in and out of the clouds, highs will be in the lower 30’s. Wind chill values in the 20’s.

On Sunday, temperatures warm to 40° with a sun and cloud mix. A touch cooler on Monday at 35°.

The next storm is still on tap for Tuesday through Thursday. Weather models show a lot of warmth with this system initially…so late in the day on Tuesday, rain showers are possible. Most of Wednesday will be a cold rain. However, by evening, I still see a change to snow in some places — not all, though. By Thursday morning, there will be a little leftover moisture giving us show showers. Temperatures for highs will be in the upper 30’s for Tuesday and Wednesday…Upper 20’s by Thursday. Overnight lows will be in the 30’s and 20’s. There’s still a lot of questions regarding this system with several more computer model runs to get through first.

Christmas Day, there’s a slim chance for a few flurries with highs in the middle 20’s. Sunshine’s back on Saturday at 32°.

Friday’s Wintry Mix And Flakes

Radar is showing some returns this morning in the form of freezing drizzle…however, it’s still pretty dry so most is probably evaporating before it reaches the surface. However, I’d keep on eye out on spotty areas of freezing drizzle and a few flakes through this morning. Temperatures will get above the freezing point later this morning, which will limit slick spots. Snow this afternoon will blossom in two different areas…one will be East of Kansas City from Columbia to St. Louis. This area may pick up an inch…with 1″ to 2″ in St. Louis. The back side of this system across central Kansas, including Topeka, Concordia and Emporia, may see up to an inch through Saturday morning. This system will be minor for us…but it will phase with another system over the East Coast and give the folks from Baltimore to Boston up to a foot of snow!

Most of the weekend will be quiet. The exception..a few flakes on Sunday. Highs this weekend will be in the 30’s with lows in the 20’s.

Next week…a pretty big storm system is taking shape. Temperatures look rather warm on Tuesday and for a portion of Wednesday…right now it looks like we’ll begin as rain. Late Wednesday, rain will change to snow before a complete changeover to snow on Christmas Eve! Snow won’t be falling on Christmas Day…but temperatures will be cold enough that right now it looks like snow will be on the ground…giving us a White Christmas! Of course, this could change depending on the track of this storm.

Not Much Warmth Today

Cold all day long with wind chill values from -7° to 0°. Mostly sunny with an afternoon high of 22°. Clear and chilly tonight at 15°. Warmer winds on Wednesday and Thursday with a sunny to partly cloudy sky. Highs will climb to the upper 30’s to the lower 40’s.

On Friday, a weak disturbance comes into Kansas City. Clouds will thicken and flurries will be possible. Right now, it doesn’t look like accumulation will be a concern. As we get closer, we’ll be able to nail down how this system will behave. Not a whole lot of moisture available! Temperatures will fall with this system to 35° on Friday. Lower 30’s for highs during the weekend.

Next week…there is a stronger system in store. Right now it’s too early to narrow down the details…but, there is a chance for rain and/or snow on Tuesday and Wednesday.

AM Slick Spots Along With Dropping Temperatures

The big story today…tumbling temperatures and the possibility for slick morning spots! Kansas City is at 41° right now as I write this during First News at 5 AM. By this afternoon, we’ll be in the lower 20’s! Patchy drizzle is expected to form South of a line from St. Joseph to Chillicothe this morning. North of this line, drizzle could freeze on the roads…They might also see a few flakes! . Depending on how quickly we cool in the metro, bridges and overpasses may have a slick spot or two due to the slightly damp roads this morning. However, most of the moisture with today’s system will stay North through Nebraska and Iowa.

In the deep freeze tonight thanks to an Arctic intrusion at 11°. Bitter bus stops in the morning and the afternoon. Highs will be in the lower 20’s.

Mostly sunny to partly cloudy Wednesday through most of Friday. Highs will warm back up in the upper 30’s to lower 40’s. There’s a system Friday night and Saturday morning that may produce a few flakes…it’s still a few days away, but it’s not looking as impressive this morning as it did yesterday. Temperatures next weekend will be in the 30’s with lower in the teens.

Another Murky Day!

Areas of dense fog Sunday morning. As the fog mixes out, we might see some sunshine before the clouds thicken again. Later this afternoon and evening, drizzle is possible. Today’s high will be 40°.

Tonight, a cold front arrives. Clouds with fog – all possible – with temperatures falling. We’ll be in the 30’s Monday morning and the 20’s by Monday afternoon.

Tuesday will be bitter at 26°. Warming to the 40’s by Thursday. There’s a slim chance for a few flakes Friday night and Saturday morning.
